Lalique
  Lalique
Born in 1860, René Lalique began designing fine jewelry in Paris in 1881, and experimenting with glass around 1883. He opened his own glassworks in 1909, becoming synonymous with French Art Nouveau decorative arts. Favored motifs were dancing nymphs, fish, dragonflies and foliage. A wide variety of objects were produced, including perfume bottles, vases, inkwells, boxes, bookends, vases, clocks, automobile mascots and stemware. Today's leaded Lalique glass is ether mold blown or pressed. Characteristically the glass is crystal in combination with acid-etched relief. Shown: Lalique “Rouges Roses” Bowl, adorned in roses and ribbons, $2,850.

Orrefors
  Orrefors
Deep in the woods of Småland, Orrefors Glassworks has stood a hundred years on two pillars: beautiful clear crystal and evolutionary design. The transformation of glass from a hot, syrupy mass to a piece of glittering crystal is a spectacular process that takes place here every day. Although glass has been made for well over a thousand years, the techniques used today remain almost identical to those used centuries ago. Still, generations of skilled Orrefors glassblowers and designers have repeatedly surprised us with innovative crystal creations, and they continue to do so today. Shown: "Valentino" Bowl, $175. "Valentino" Vase, $275. Also available: "Amour" Votive, $35.
